A Message From The Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Members:

It is hard to believe that we have completed a month of the school year already. As we enter October, we recognize this as the “Month of the Young Adolescent” sponsored by the Association for Middle Level Education. The purpose of the observance is to remind all of us of the uniqueness of the ten to fifteen year age group.

The changes our children go through during this period of time physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally are second only to the time they were in the infancy period. Middle school teachers and parents see the children change so fast, try on different personalities, can be opinionated and compliant in the same breath, have a strong sense of fairness yet treat others, on occasion, unfairly.

The young adolescent is neither elementary nor secondary, immature and matures in the same day, and is extremely changeable in the moment. They require special teaching methods attuned to the young people they are and their need to socialize as part of their learning process.

What is most important is that the community, parents and teachers continue to develop and foster effective partnership around how best to support encourage and educate our young adolescents to facilitate our partnership between home and school several initiatives have been rolled out to students and parents. The first is access to the Parent Portal in PowerSchool. Parents who have created their accounts by providing student information in “Infosnap” on our website have access to their child’s grades and assignments through the Parent Portal using their user name and password. This is similar to last year and parent will be able to see all their children’s information relative to assignments and grades. Students, grades 6-8 have similar access to a student portal in PowerSchool. This allows the student access to only their class assignments and grades.

Teacher Class pages are on our Learning Management System (LMS).  Parents must have a Powerschool parent portal account to have access to LMS.  Class pages include assignments, class announcements, learning resources and a class calendar. The LMS Student Access can be located on our website under the “Quick links” (top right corner). All students have access as a member of the class using their username and password. Parents can also view this information through their child’s account.

All students are being oriented to network access, their new gmail on our new secure Google Apps for Education platform, the Learning Management System (class pages), and the Naviance tool for Student Success plans. We have tried to keep student passwords uniform for their Class Page and Email and student portal tools. Please ask your child for their access information. All parents will receive a direct mailing with their child’s usernames and access information.

It is our goal to have students use these communication and collaboration tools to enhance their learning experience and educational opportunities at Suffield Middle School, as well as, improve our home school communication.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have questions or concerns regarding our efforts as we embrace these digital learning tools.

We would like to thank all the parents who came to chaperone and assist during the Welcome Back Dance and Fun Night. Also, thank you to all those who donated baked goods and snacks. It was a great night and congratulations to those students who won raffle prizes.

Did you know that the PTAC provides a donation to support the Eighth Grade whitewater rafting trip? The students had a wonderful experience. Every dollar raised by the PTAC goes back into supporting enrichment programs for the students at SMS. We appreciate your support.

We are holding a Box Tops Contest through October 16th. Please clip those labels – involve family and friends. It’s a friendly competition of boys against girls. The winning team will be awarded with a pajama day.

Planning has already begun for the Eighth Grade yearbook. The PTAC provides a free yearbook to all Eighth Graders on the last day of school. Look for opportunities to purchase personal ads as well as for submitting baby pictures.
