Suffield Middle School December and January BannerSuffield Middle School has been recognized twice in recent years by the Connecticut Association of Schools for it's positive school climate and culture. We continue to examine actions and activities that improve upon students’ sense of social and emotional security as it relates to building positive relationships, being engaged, feeling connected to their learning community, and developing personal responsibility.

Engaging students in meaningful opportunities is a cornerstone of the middle school experience. Some recent events to promote active engagement have been the success of our fall interscholastic sports teams with 21 young athletes on the field hockey team and over 130 participates in the cross country program.

The November production of the “Medieval Times” Variety Show staged over 40 acts involving students, staff and administration in three performances. The Drama Club has recruited over 120 students interested in participating in the February musical production of “The Little Mermaid” just prior to our PE Department beginning practices for the widely popular SMS gymnastics spring show.

Most recently some of our 7th and 8th grade students, working with an advisor during Quest, have begun student productions of the SMS Student News Update using the TV Studio equipment purchased though the generosity of the SFES. These student directed internet broadcasts are increasingly accessed by the entire school in place of our morning announcements. Future broadcast will incorporate video footage of school events, interviews, weather updates, community interest stories and public service announcements.

In November, 8th grade students began rotating through three sessions of a personalized career exploration module as part of their Quest offerings. These engaging modules are designed to provide students with an awareness of personality traits, areas of interest, and associated career fields.

On November 18th SMS hosted student ambassadors from the University of Connecticut’s Engineering program to address our 8th grade regarding engineering as a career path. This was the first of several meetings which will bring UConn students to provide engineering lab experiences for our 8th graders in the spring.

Members of the SMS First Lego League have been actively preparing for their robotics competition, “Nature’s Fury” Saturday November 24th here at Suffield Middle School. We will be fielding two 7 member teams along with 13 other teams.

Our community service groups such as SOURCEPROMISE, and Giraffe continue their good work and contributions during this “giving” time of year.

Our school community has decided to lend a collective hand to less fortunate. Our advisory groups at all grade levels are going to participate in a program to collect food for baskets to be donated by our school to those that are less fortunate. We will be partnering with Loaves and Fishes in Enfield as well the Cross Roads food pantry in Suffield.

There is a dual benefit here that those in need will be provided with some much needed relief at a critical time and our students will understand and be part of the real joy of the holidays sharing and giving.

We continue to plan and encourage all SMS students to be connected and engaged in these, as well as, other activities that will be provided throughout this school year. We feel the more students are engaged the more they will feel connected and secure in their community of learners. For more information, please contact our guidance department and check out our website https://www.suffield.org/.
