SHS ATHLETICS – A November to Remember: The boys and girls soccer teams treated their fans to an entire season of entertaining play at a high level. The two sides finished at a combined 39-1. The highlight came on a beautiful Saturday afternoon when both teams competed for state championships. The boys, coached by Mark  Beigel, beat Ellington 2-0 to capture a third straight Class M title. The girls, coached by David Sullivan, competed this year in Class LL – the largest schools in the state – and reached the title game before falling to St. Joseph-Trumbull 2-1. Both teams won NCCC titles as well. Not surprisingly, the Booster Club Athletes of the Month came from these teams with seniors Sean Sullivan and Reilly Williams honored. Patrick Begley won the NCCC individual title before placing second at the Class M meet, 16th at the state open meet and an impressive 16th at the New England Championships. He ran the fastest time ever by a Suffield student at the New Englands. The boys team finished second at the NCCC and third at the Class M. The girls team finished second at the NCCC and second again at the Class M state meet. Monique Labarre and Nina Begley finished eighth and 10th respectively at that state meet as part of a strong team effort. The field hockey team finished 12-3-0-1 in the regular season to qualify for the playoffs. The girls swimming team finished eighth in a field of 32 point-scorers at the Class S state meet, the girls volleyball team reached the NCCC playoffs, and the football team is 6-4 and assured of a winning record this season. SCHOOL SPIRIT and COMMUNITY: The seniors prevailed on Spirit Night, which capped Spirit Week and once again proved one of the more enjoyable nights of the year. This annual event is organized and sponsored by Student Senate and we thank Ms. Whiteley and Ms. Kruk, Student Senate advisors, for their hard work toward making this event successful. The Names Assembly proved a powerful part of the week as students saw firsthand how much how we treat each other matters. Ronald Augeri performed the song “True Colors” to draw the event to a fitting and poignant conclusion. Thanks to Mr. Bosworth, Ms. Strange, and an army of student and faculty volunteers for making the event so meaningful. The play Alice in Wonderland was performed under the leadership of Ms. Holland. The show was marked by a fabulous stage, terrific acting and excellent execution. During parent-teacher conferences last week, 33 members of the NHS – 11 on each of the three days -- visited Spaulding School to read to classes. The high school students also made posters or other aids that encouraged students to read. AGRISCIENCE: Three of our agricultural student teams - Nursery Landscape,  Poultry Judging, and Floriculture - competed at the fall Career Development Events held at the University of Connecticut in early November. Suffield’s Nursery Landscape team placed first in the state. Individually, Emily LaFlamme placed first, Natasia Baker second, Kelsie Merrill fifth and Conor Smith ninth. The Poultry Judging team finished third overall with Jonathan Waterman seventh individually. Floriculture team placed ninth. The Nursery Landscape team will compete at the 87th National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. LOOKING FORWARD TO DECEMBER: The FFA Holiday Sale, which benefits the program and its community service efforts, will be held Monday, December 2 through Saturday, December 7. Purchases can be made between 8-6 Monday through Friday and between 10-2 on Saturday. Poinsettias in three sizes, door swags, floral centerpieces, birch reindeer, wreaths and kissing balls are all for sale. Special orders are possible as well. Please visit. The Empty Bowl Project will hold a fundraiser on Thursday, December 5, in our Commons from 6-8 p.m. with proceeds donated to the Suffield Emergency Aid Association and Action Against Hunger. Students in the district have created bowls, and students in the cooking classes will make soup. Attendees purchase a bowl and soup for $10. A total of 100 bowls are created. If the bowls run out, the cost is $5 for soup.  The National Honor Society will conduct its annual gift collection for needy families in the Hartford Area. The Toys for Tots and Teens effort will begin following Thanksgiving. Classes with 100 percent participation will be entered in a raffle to go shopping with any cash that is collected, and will also be recognized in announcements. NHS is also be promoting a winter dance on Friday, December 13, that will be free of charge for any student who donated a gift. The charge for those who did not donate is $10 with all proceeds given to charity.
SKI CLUB:
 The Ski Club has moved to the Internet, providing easy access to all information and updates. Those interested can reach the site by visiting the middle school or high school pages. Once there, visitors should click on Directory, then Group Pages and then Clubs. The club runs on a first-come, first-serve basis.
COLLEGE RECRUITING:
 Brent Williams, former NFL Player, will speak about the college
recruiting process for athletes on Wednesday, December 4th, from 6:30-7:30 at the Suffield High School Auditorium. He will provide general recruiting information that applies all athletes. The Suffield High Booster Club and Tri-Town Football Booster Association are the hosts.
