2013-2014 School Calendar School Lunch Menu College Planning Calendars 2013-2014 Suffield High School Student Handbook Partnering with Parents - 21st Century Skills Superintendent Newsletter Technology Tools for Parents & Guardians | |  A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Communication between teachers and parents or guardians ranks as one of the most critical components in a successful experience for our students. Our staff works diligently in exploring a variety of avenues that ensure any academic or social issues are handled as quickly as possible. This goal is accomplished through the use of vehicles such as progress reports and PowerSchool updates along with conversations between teachers and parents to address individual needs or concerns. One opportunity for this type of conversation is our parent-teacher conferences which are coming up soon.
I would like to encourage all parents to partner with teachers by scheduling one of these 10-minute, face-to-face meetings. Conferences are scheduled for November 20th through the 22nd and appointments are available between 12:30-2:30pm on all three afternoons and from 6:30-9pm on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. All scheduling will be completed through the link on our website; the link is open through November 18th. You will need your student’s district ID in order to schedule conferences. HIGH SPIRITS: Student preparations for Spirit Week, scheduled from November 4th – 8th, are well underway. This popular week is an enjoyable experience, and provides a great opportunity for students to feel connected to the school community. Two events in particular are especially noteworthy. Spirit Night is scheduled for Friday, November 8th and is the culmination of class spirit activities and contest. Each year, students work under the guidance of their class advisors to create an original skit/dance which is performed that evening. Class advisors can provide further information to students and parents who have questions or suggestions.
In addition, we will host the “Names Can Really Hurt Us” Assembly program during Spirit Week on Tuesday, Nov. 5th. This all-day event is an anti-bias program presented in conjunction with the Anti-Defamation League; it serves to reinforce a respectful and tolerant climate at our school. Student volunteers and students speakers help make this a powerful event. More than 40 teachers and 50 students volunteered to help direct the small group discussions that comprise a large chunk of the proceedings. Suffield High School hosted this assembly program four years ago and experienced great benefit from it. Our goal is to bring the program to SHS every four years such that all students experience the program during their high school career. COLLEGE PREP: The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) has chosen their focus topic this year and will work with school administration and guidance to creating a resource bank to support parents and students through the college application process. This topic is currently on the mind of many students, especially seniors! Financial Aid Night will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30th, in the school auditorium and will include valuable information relative to tuition support. The College Fair was held Thursday, October 24th, drawing a wide-array of college representatives and a substantial number of students. Suffield High School students have been offered admission to a variety of different colleges and universities. Click here to see the list of acceptances. IN THE AG BAG:  The Agriscience Department will hold its Open House for eighth-graders on Thursday, November 14th from 6:30-8:30pm. Informational presentations will be held at 6:30 and 7:30, and tours of the Agriscience center will be provided throughout the evening. Prospective students will have the opportunity to meet teachers, enrolled students and current parents as well enjoy time to explore the labs and instructional areas. All are welcome; pre-registration is not required.
A total of 22 students from Suffield will attend the FFA national convention in Louisville, Kentucky, from Oct. 29th - November 2nd. Five current students and graduates- Molly Drakeley, Conor Smith, Brigitte Rathey, Jessica Blair and graduate Sarah D'Agata - will represent Suffield in the National Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event. Additionally, two other Suffield graduates, Rene Ewing and Rachel Liberty, will be joining the current students at the convention. Each will receive American Degrees, given to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment and achieved significant accomplishments in their Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE). All attendees will participate in educational workshops, industry tours, career fair activities and convention sessions.
Closer to home, five Suffield teams will compete in Career Development Events at the University of Connecticut on Friday, November 8th. Suffield students will participate in the following categories: Horse Evaluation; Poultry Evaluation; Meat Science; Floriculture; and Nursery Landscape. | |
| | A total of 26 students, 18 juniors and eight seniors, were recently inducted as members of the National Honor Society, which recognizes students for scholarship, service, leadership and character. They joined 32 returning members. English teacher, Jeanine Rose, gave the induction address. Allison Carson, Benjamin Gee, Brent Heineman, Kyle Laviana and Emma Ryan are the society’s elected officers. Congratulations to all inductees!
Congratulations also go out to Yonina Bykov, Ryan Englander, Ben Gee, Emma Ryan and Josh Service for receiving commendations from the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students scored in the top 5% nationally on their PSAT assessment! Kudos to Clarissa Burke who is the World Language Student of the Month. Lastly, we extend a hearty “Bravo!” to Celia Randall and Ben Woodhouse for being chosen as this year’s Wendy’s High School Heisman Award winners for Suffield High School! Ben Woodhouse is also October’s Rotary Student of the month! | |
Congratulations to Patrick Begley, who won the NCCC individual cross country title. Begley and Mariah Peck of the field hockey team were selected athletes of the month for September by the Suffield High School Athletic Booster Club. Both the boys and girls cross country teams finished second in their respective NCCC championship races. The girls also won their race at the prestigious Wickham Park Invitational in Manchester. Our field hockey team has reached double digits in victories, a run that includes an impressive recent win over Conard of West Hartford. Our Raiders co-op football team has won four of its six games this year. Both boys and girls soccer opened their seasons by winning their first 13 games. Girls swimming is currently 5-5, and the girls volleyball team, still a young program, made a run at qualifying for the league tournament. All are part of what has been a tremendously successful fall sports season!
