Suffield High School has identified building more meaningful relationships through increased communication between the school and home. The entire staff of Suffield High School is dedicated to working alongside parents to ensure student’s academic, behavioral, or social needs are being met and handled in a timely and sensitive manner. Viewing of current grades through PowerSchool, utilization of the teacher’s webpages, and of course progress reports and report cards are just a few ways parents can remain in contact. While email is an efficient means of getting information, the single most effective means of communication is the actual conversation between teachers and both students and parents. I remind everyone of the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences November 18, 19, and 20 where parents will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with a teacher in a 10-minute meeting. Conferences are available between 12:30-2:30 on all three afternoons and from 6:00-8:30 on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Starting November 2nd, you can use pickAtime, an internet based online appointment scheduling system, to select your meeting times. https://pickatime.com/client?ven=11608505  The link will remain open until the last day of conferences and additional communication will be sent from the school with details on how to schedule those conferences. In order to access pickAtime, you will need your student’s district ID, which was included in the letter sent home. Office secretaries are ready and able to assist anyone, so please do not hesitate to call as we are always happy to help. | Art Show | | SHS’s own Mr. Kudrle is having a Master’s thesis art show November 14-22. The opening reception will be Friday, November 20th. He will be presenting numerous works based on contemporary narratives using classical paintings. | Athletes of the Month | |  The Suffield High School Athletic Booster Club has chosen Julian Frare and Valerie Krzanowski as the athletes of the month. Students are awarded the honor based on their athletic and academic accomplishments, attitudes, and leadership skills.
Julian Frare has truly worked through the ranks on the soccer team. He spent two years on the JV team until making varsity. He is known as being a captain both on and off the field, always bringing his positive attitude around the school. As well as being captain of the soccer team, Julian also participates in basketball, tennis, and indoor track. He credits his greatest accomplishment as winning Rookie of the Year for Tennis last spring. Julian is an honor roll student and recently was accepted into the National Honors Society. Valerie Krzanowski is captain of the field hockey team. She has been on varsity for the past three years, and plays both defender and sweeper for the team. Although Valerie is quiet, she leads by examples. Her enthusiasm and respect for everyone is what credits the team really coming together. She is a high honor roll student and also is a part of the National Honors Society. As well as being a part of the field hockey team, Valerie also plays basketball for the high school. The field hockey team made the tournament last year, and is hoping for a strong season this year as well. Congratulations to our winners Valerie and Julian! Thank you for being outstanding role models for our community. | | | | | | | | | | | Best Buddies - Epilepsy Awareness Month | | |  November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month. One in 26 of us will develop epilepsy in our lifetime and nearly 3 million Americans currently live with epilepsy making it the fourth most common neurological condition in the United States. Epilepsy is more prevalent than cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and autism – combined. In an effort to show the community how we are embracing the goal of not letting any barriers stop people with epilepsy from reaching their fullest potential, Suffield High School’s Best Buddies program has tied purple ribbons around poles and trees on school property this month to show our support to those community members with epilepsy and the staff will be planning an “everyone wear purple day for staff and students” on Friday, November 6th. Staff are being asked to make donations for a jean day that same day with all proceeds to go to the Epilepsy Foundation.
| | Bushy Hill Farm Fieldtrip | | |  On October 5th, students in the Foods 1 class visited Bushy Hill Farm in Granby, CT. Students picked apples, visited the sanitation and distribution center, and heard a talk about the importance of bees. All 46 students that attended received a bag of apples from the farm and made an apple crisp with the leftovers.
| | Eagle Scout Projects | | | 
Suffield High School would like to send a special thanks to two of our junior students who spent time over the summer improving specific aspects of the grounds as part of their individual Eagle Scout projects. Ryan Cleaves recently prepped and spread mulch to improve the overall safety of certain sections of the cross country course in the wooded section behind the school. Ty Vinick spent many hours refurbishing the wooden bleachers located between Beneski Turf Field and the track area so they can be better enjoyed by spectators. The high school would like to thank both of these individuals for their time, dedication, and community service as both projects help students, parents, and the community have a more enjoyable experience. | | Little Women | | |  This December SHS Drama Club brings you Little Women, a classic tale about growing up, love, and becoming the person you always wanted to be. Director, Stephanie Holland, with help from all cast and crew in the SHS Drama Club breathes new life into the classic story by Louisa May Alcott. It is sure to be a fantastic production full of joy and sorrow; a show that will definitely immerse the audience into the world of lower middle class family that struggles with money, disease, and more during the Civil War, while also finding moments to enjoy the little things in life. This is a great holiday show, as cast members will be singing Christmas carols. Dates for the show are December 3, 4, and 5 at 7:00 p.m. The December 5th matinee will be at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be bought at the door for $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Dan considers himself the ultimate “sports guy.” He is the varsity captain of both the baseball and hockey teams. Last year Dan helped the hockey team win the state championship. He has also played all five positions during his high school career, something extremely difficult to accomplish. Because of his love of sports, Dan plans on going to college to study sports broadcasting. Dan is the epitome of a role model by also being the president of his senior class, a member of the National Honor Society, and a coach for the Writing Center. Outside of school, Dan is a catechist for Sacred Heart Church. When he is not busy with all of these activities, Dan enjoys being an Emcee and DJ for Team Cares DJ Entertainment. Congratulations to Dan Bahl! | | Message from Safe Grad | | | A HUGE THANK YOU for our Sept bottle drive volunteers who came out in full force! Don’t forget about our next bottle drive on Saturday, Dec. 5th. Volunteers are ALWAYS needed. Also, another huge thank you to all parents and administration for supporting our annual pie sale. We successfully reached our goal for this particular fundraiser and we’re not done yet! Don’t forget to pick your purchases up at Suffield High School on 11/19. What’s next? Thank you!! | | Science Fair Club | | |  On Tuesday, September 29th, the Science Fair Club held its first meeting of the year with a special guest speaker, Sandra Muller, President of the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair. Mrs. Muller spoke about the impact of working on a science fair project, creating the idea for a project along with safety in regard to running experiments while gathering data for analysis. The Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair will be held at Quinnipiac University from March 15-19, 2016. This will be the 4th year for the Suffield Science Fair Club to compete in our state science fair.
| | National Honor Society | | |  A total of 50 students, 40 juniors and 10 seniors, were recently inducted as members of Suffield High School’s Sigma Chapter of the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society recognizes students for scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The new members joined 21 returning members including the society’s elected officers: Priya Mehta, Noelle Albert, Caelee Sorto, and Laura Sweeney.

The Suffield High School Unity Team, Suffield Unites, is led by Mr. Canny and is dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive educational environment and bringing individuals together as one student body. Suffield Unites will focus on acknowledging, accepting, and respecting diversity, fighting bias and harassment, and spreading awareness and positivity. This year’s team contains a base of ten students:  Katherine Baker (JR), Bryan Calderon (SO), Jestalyn Dominguez (FR), Katelayn Eudovic (SO), Caelie Flanagan (JR), Tiffany Gonzalez (SO), Destiny Gonzalez-Delgado (SO), Zachary Hunleth (JR), Giancarlo Isotti (JR), and Ty Vinick (JR). The team has individuals of different ages, interests and backgrounds, who share a common passion: that of creating a unified school. On Friday, October 9, the team came together for the first time to attend a conference at the University of Hartford, where they met with other Teams from across the state, and began developing some ideas as to what unity is, and how it can exist within our school. The team came away ready to lead the school in the challenge of becoming comfortable in our discomfort, being truthful and perceptive, and supporting each other toward the common goal of the betterment of Suffield High School.
| | Writing Center | | |  The SHS Writing Center continues to grow! Advisors Mr. Efland and Mrs. Monahan took students Dan Bahl, Caitlin Little, Amelia Picard, Meredith Randall, Hailey Sinon, and Elle McCusker to UConn on October 9th to present. Students created a video showcasing SHS teachers and students’ thoughts on the Writing Center, as well as prepared a mock Writing Center session for their presentation. This presentation was a part of the 8th annual UConn Conference for Secondary School Writing Centers. Students presented to approximately 240 peers and 30 educators from across Connecticut. | | | | Suffield Public Schools
