| |  | Principal’s Message | | Sunny days and brisk nights – fluctuating temperatures are a true indication that summer has finally relinquished control of temperatures and fall has finally arrived. It is hard to believe that the first month of school is already complete. This week we enter the 5th week of school and the printing of Quarter 1 Progress Reports. The Class of 2019 has quickly transitioned into the building and all students are actively benefiting from the 1:1 Digital Learning Environment. At home, I suggest continual reminders regarding each student’s responsibility to know and understand the responsible use policy. This is also the perfect time to remind students of the importance of established routines regarding homework completion and school work. What a busy first month! Thank you to all the parents that attended our annual Open House on September 24th. The school appreciates the support and looks forward to a strong school-family partnership and productive enjoyable school year. As a reminder, our parent conferences will be on November 18-20. Please keep an eye out as more information will be sent in early November. | Bus Safety Reminders | | As a reminder, students wishing to take a bus home or to the middle school other than their designated bus must bring a signed note from a parent to school. This is a common practice at the younger grades and is just as important at the high school level so an accurate accounting of students on the bus exists “should” an incident occur. A note will also be required for students wishing to take a bus and depart at the middle school. Bus 17 is the only bus that will allow students to depart at the middle school and is the last bus in the line closest to the school at bus pick-up time. | Suffield High School Marching Band | | The Suffield High School Band has started the year “marching” with three performances already in this early school year. The band took part in the annual September 11th parade in the town center, performed at the September 25th football game, and again at the annual parade at the Big E in West Springfield on October 1st. The Band, directed by Joe Migliore, is 65 strong and this year is led by Drum Major Caelie Flanagan. Please come out and support this outstanding group of musicians at their upcoming performances. | Rotary Student of the Month |  The October Rotary Student of the Month is awarded to Dan Bahl. Dan considers himself the ultimate “sports guy” as he is the varsity captain of both the baseball and hockey teams. He has also played all five positions during his high school career, something extremely difficult to accomplish, and last year helped the hockey team win the state. Because of his love of sports, Dan plans to study sports broadcasting in college. Dan is the epitome of a role model by also being the president of his senior class, a member of the National Honor Society, and a coach for the Writing Center. Outside of school, Dan is a catechist for Sacred Heart Church and when not busy with all of these activities he enjoys being an Emcee and DJ for Team Cares DJ Entertainment. Congratulations Dan on a job well done.
| National Merit Scholarship | |  Congratulations to Noelle Albert, Lukas Baker, Kate Colson, and Joseph Howarth who have been named Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Certificate of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has been presented to each of these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. "The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success." The entire Suffield High School population congratulates Noelle, Lukas, Kate, and Joseph on this outstanding accomplishment.
| Common Ground | | The Common Ground Club, a leadership diversity group, has come back to Suffield High School. Suffield students travel to Hartford to help bridge the gap between the two communities. Students work together to practice skills in public speaking, personal finance, career readiness, and cultural celebration. The group works together to complete a public service project of their choice in Hartford. Please see Ms. Baumann for more details. | Unity Club | | Suffield High School is forming a Unity team comprised of student leaders from all current groupings the high school has to offer - town students, choice students, and Ag students. The mission of the Unity Club is to create a safe culture for all at SHS. Please see Mr. Canny or Mr. Picard for more details. | Writing Center | | The Writing Center has been completely revamped for the 2015-2016 school year. The Writing Center now boasts new facilities in the Media Center, room 310D. Training for coaches has already begun. As of the beginning of the school year, 50 students have signed on to be trained as coaches. Please see Mr. Efland or Mrs. Monahan for details or to set up appointments for your classes. | Foreign Language | | September to October is Hispanic Heritage Month. The Foreign Language classes have been preparing projects to celebrate. The theme for this year involves looking at the similarities and differences in social media in Spanish speaking countries. | | | | | | | | | | | Suffield on the Green | | | Class councils did a wonderful job setting up booths at Suffield on the Green. Sophomores had a pop the balloon contest, guess the jellybeans, and a spin the wheel game to win a Dunkin Donuts gift card. The Junior class had sign ups for the Color Run being held October 17th, as well as baked goods for sale. Finally, the Seniors had the annual dunk tank, in which many faculty, staff, and students participated. | | Wildcat Cards & Company | | | Wildcat Cards & Co. is selling cards in the school bookstore again this year. Cards are $2.00 with 25% of the proceeds going to the Kevin Vitale Memorial Fund. | | Fall Sports | | | Well…the fall sports season is in full affect…as noted by several of our coaches our school spirit is also in full affect. We are proud of our students for their spirit and support and we continue to promote positive and respectful school spirit in addition to outstanding sportsmanship. Our Football Raiders are off to a 1-1 start. They opened the season with a loss to Ellington, but bounced back last week beating Coventry 30-6. Our Raiders had a total of 5 TDs, 455 yards against Coventry- fantastic improvement from week one to two. After only 3 swim meets, the following five girls have already qualified for States- Alyssa Pacewicz. 200 I.M., 50 Free, 100 Free, and 100 Breast; Holly Corcoran in the 100 Fly; Gloria Sutton in the 500; Olivia Gervais in the 50 Free, 100 Free and the 500 Free; and Meg Voisine has qualified in the 50 Free. The field hockey team has played very inspiring field hockey to start the season. Playing against perennial powers, the Wildcats have competed at a high level and played great team field hockey. With great leadership and inspiring play this should be a fun team to watch this year. Our Girls Cross Country team won their first NCCC meet against Canton, Bolton and East Windsor. They also won the small school division at the Stratton Brook Invitational for the third year in a row getting five girls in the top ten. The boys cross country team is undefeated at this time and have beat two of the top teams in the conference (Canton and Bolton) to start the season. Suffield Boys Soccer is 4-0 and continues to work hard every day. The team graduated many of their past starters and the new players are making a huge difference this season. A very productive preseason has propelled the Girls Soccer team to a 4-0 start. A combination of upperclassman and underclassman have come together as a group to score 15 goals. Both the boys and girls soccer teams are yet to concede a goal this season. We have expanded our volleyball program to include a freshman team, and have put together one of the most competitive JV and Varsity teams that our school has ever had. The varsity Volleyball team has had a strong start to the season, going 2-3, while competing in close matchups with the top teams in our conference. Our young team is looking to build off of our first state tournament win last year, and have been working hard to improve. As always, we need to thank our Suffield cheerleaders for supporting all our teams!!! | | Ag News | | |  The Ag Department has been very busy in the first month of school. The 4H students showcased cows and goats at the Big E for two weekends. The FFA students promoted the program by setting up a turtle pond display at The Big E. During the last week of September they also attended the Big E and handed out handmade corsages. The first chapter meeting was held at the end of September. | | Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Meeting – October 28th | | | The first Parent Advisory Committee meeting was held on Tuesday, September 29th. Parents are invited to attend any and all meetings throughout the year. The PAC provides parents an opportunity to attend information sessions about the high school and also allows the administration an opportunity to better understand parental views and concerns. Meetings are held 5-6 times throughout the year and the next meeting is scheduled for October 28th at 6:00 pm in the Library Media Center.
