8th Grade Bottle Rockets

Eighth grade science students have been working on their bottle rocket unit. The goal is to make a rocket with an egg in it and launch the rocket without the egg breaking. Students have been using various materials to have a successful launch.

Unified Theater - “Flight Through Popularity”

On Wednesday, May 20th, Unified Theater put on a wonderful production of “Flight Through Popularity”.  This play was extra special as the students were not only involved on stage but every aspect of the play.  The students wrote, directed, performed, created sets and costumes, and did the back stage work for this performance and they really showcased their many talents.  The play was full of humor but also sent an important message about being kind to others and recognizing how your actions affect other people.  It truly was inspiring to see our Middle School students create such a work of art all on their own.

Paraprofessional of the Year, Helen Thresher

Suffield Middle School is happy to celebrate our paraprofessional of the year, Helen Thresher.  Helen was nominated by the teachers on the sixth grade team for all of her hard work and dedication to the students and our school.  Here is just a sample of some of the wonderful comments from the team.  “Helen works as a partner while in the classroom.”  “Helen is respected by both students and staff.  She earns this respect by being true to her word - her words are ‘golden’. If she says it, she follows through with it.  She is a person that students and teachers can trust unequivocally.”  “With other staff members, Helen helps to produce our yearly middle school drama production and our Unified theater program. If you drive by school on a weekend, you’ll see Mrs. Thresher’s car in the parking lot; she is inside painting and/or creating amazing sets.”   There were so many wonderful things to say about the work Helen does here at the Middle School on a daily basis.  We are proud to have such a wonderful educator represent our school and district as the Paraprofessional of the Year.  Congratulations to Helen!

Eighth Grade Award Winners

Congratulations to our Eighth Grade Award winners!  We recently honored a small group of exceptional students at an awards ceremony this past Tuesday.  It was a lovely event with attendance from some wonderful students, families, several teachers, the principals, and even Dr. Chafetz!  It was a nice afternoon to recognize the excellence in our building from some superior student leaders.  Each winner demonstrates qualities such as diligence, patience, maturity, determination, and compassion on a daily basis and truly stand out amongst their peers.

Scholastic Challenge Winner

On May 29th, we recognized the winner of the Scholastic Challenge during our school day.  The Scholastic Challenge is “an entertaining and challenging enrichment activity that allows them to demonstrate a variety of problem solving skills and knowledge in many academic areas.” (schoolschallenge.com).  Genevieve (Genny) Valvo, a current sixth grader, received the highest score of the 52 students involved.  Way to go Genny!!!

SFES Classroom Library Grant
for Grade 6 Students at Suffield Middle School

This year grade 6 language arts teachers were recipients of a grant that was funded by the Suffield Foundation for Excellent Schools. In 2014, reading specialists Phyllis Hameroff and Ashley Molden submitted the Home/School Classroom Library Connection Grant written to improve Suffield Middle School’s language arts classroom libraries. SFES awarded the grade 6 teachers $2,000.00 to spend on purchasing new books that will provide their classrooms with a variety of independent literature that can travel between home and school. The 6th grade teachers were able to give students the opportunity to choose their own reading material of varying text complexities. New books include nonfiction, realistic fiction, science fiction, and graphic novels.  Suffield Middle School would like to thank SFES for their generosity and the work they do to support the Suffield Schools.

Promise and Mild Clubs
Pine Lake Challenge

The Promise and Mild Clubs attended the Pine Lake Challenge in Bristol, CT on Friday, May 1st. It was an all-day outing with team building activities for the whole group.

The two teams split to experience high and low ropes challenges. Each team worked with a Pine Lake counselor to work out a challenge.  This group had to move the entire group to the other side without touching the group using the swing.  The groups did very well!

The girls learned how to work safely with harnesses and helmets and swing high and work together!

It was a beautiful day in the out of doors and a great day to enjoy these two clubs in the out of doors!
