(5) Participation in Athletics and Extra Curricular Activities

The Board believes that all students' first priority should be their academic program. Since participation in extracurricular activities may require a significant commitment of time and energy, a participant and his or her parents, teachers and coaches should frequently monitor the educational progress of the student to ensure that extracurricular activities are not impeding his or her academic development. Our schools provide numerous opportunities for its students to participate in extracurricular activities. These activities are conducted according to an overriding philosophy that is consistent with the academic program. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities; however, students should not sacrifice the quality of their academic program in pursuit of these opportunities.

Participation as a Privilege

Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege and not a right. Expectations to participate in extracurricular activities will be of the highest order. These expectations include, but are not limited to meeting academic eligibility requirements, standards of conduct, honesty and integrity, and school and community citizenship. When a student elects to participate in an extracurricular activity, he or she is explicitly agreeing to abide by these standards, which may exceed those that are required or expected of other students.

Participation Requirements

Student participation requirements vary by program. The communication, management and monitoring of program requirements will be the responsibility of the building principal or his or her designee, or the Athletic Director.

Eligibility and Eligibility Appeals

Academic eligibility requirements and an appeal process will be set forth in the administration regulations to this policy and approved by the Board.
