Series 5000 - Students

1.   Elementary and Secondary

B. Progress/Records

(1)  Examination/Grading/Rating

The Suffield Board of Education expects all children to attain their academic potential, making achievement both recognizable and possible for students.  There will be a process of continued evaluation of student performance which shall include standardized measures of achievement and school learning ability and attainment of Suffield curricular objectives.

Each student who is required shall take a statewide mastery examination, provided by and administered under the supervision of the State Board of Education.  Achievement of a satisfactory score on the mastery test shall not be required as the sole criterion for promotion or graduation.

Weighted Grading
The Suffield High School educational program contains a wide variety of courses at various levels of academic challenge.  Students are encouraged to strive for academic excellence.  The weighting of grades encourages and rewards students for selecting courses that are more challenging.   Students may apply for the level of course which they believe is most appropriate.

Parents and students shall be advised, via the parent/student handbook, of these guidelines and the specifics of the weighted program.   The Superintendent and/or his/her designee will monitor and implement the guidelines and specifics of the grade weighting program.
