2017 - 2018 Paraeducator of the Year

Morgan O'Malley, a paraprofessional colleague at Suffield High School, has been named the 2018 Suffield Paraeducator of the Year.

Morgan was chosen among several paraprofessionals nominated for the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator Award, which honors excellence in those who support student achievement. The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a paraeducator who lost her life in the Sandy Hook tragedy. Morgan exhibits all the qualities expected of her in the role of paraeducator. She works tirelessly for the student she is assigned to one-to-one by planning, implementing and adjusting curriculum and assessing programming to ensure her student’s success. She also takes an active role in getting to know and support other students. Her passion for what she does is evident in her daily duties as well as the additional roles she fills: Morgan is a regular job coach and co-advisor to the Best Buddies Club. Morgan is loved and respected by all and has a passion for her work and for the students with whom she works.

Ms. O’Malley will be recognized by the Board of Education at its September 5, 2017 meeting and at the state wide reception in October.

2016-2017 Paraeducator of the Year - Megan McCoy

2016 - 2017 Paraeducator of the Year

Megan McCoy, a paraprofessional colleague at Suffield Middle School, has been named the 2017 Suffield Paraeducator of the Year.

Megan was chosen among several paraprofessionals nominated for the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator Award, which honors excellence in those who support student achievement. The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a paraeducator who lost her life in the Sandy Hook tragedy. In his recommendation letter of nomination, Mr. Damon Pearce, Suffield Middle School Principal, wrote: Megan has distinguished herself in Suffield by her conscientious, student-centered focus. She is positive, focused and an absolute joy to work with. In his recommendation letter of nomination, Mr. Chad Allegro, Special Education Teacher at SMS, wrote: Megan’s positive attitude, great sense of humor, and energy has a daily impact on the students and their motivation to learn. Megan is an asset to the Suffield Public Schools learning community. She fosters a climate of mutual respect with both students and colleagues. Megan represents the Suffield Public Schools as she continues to participate in the process towards the identification of the Connecticut Paraeducator of the Year.

Ms. McCoy was recognized by the Board of Education at its June 6, 2016 meeting.

Helen Thresher, a paraprofessional colleague at Suffield Middle School, has been named the 2016 Suffield Paraeducator of the Year.

Helen was chosen among several paraprofessionals nominated for the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator Award, which honors excellence in those who support student achievement. The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a paraeducator who lost her life in the Sandy Hook tragedy. In their letter of nomination supporting Helen, the sixth grade team of teachers wrote: Helen works as a partner while in the classroom. She takes special care to note observations regarding small groups or cooperative partners. She often brings a fresh set of eyes to classroom lessons, and as a part of our team, she sees students learning in many different settings. Helen is willing to share her ideas and observations and is an important part of our village. Helen represents the Suffield Public Schools as she continues to participate in the process towards the identification of the Connecticut Paraeducator of the Year.

Ms. Thresher was recognized by the Board of Education at its June 2, 2015 meeting.

2014 - 2015 Paraeducator of the Year - Michele Urch

We are pleased to announce that Michele Urch was chosen as the 2014-2015 Paraeducator of the Year by building principals. Michele is a Special Education Paraprofessional at Spaulding School. Michele was recognized by the Superintendent and Board of Education at its June 3, 2014 meeting, and she will also be recognized at the State level on November 6, 2014.

The Connecticut State Department of Education and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council have established the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year Program to recognize the important role of paraeducators in supporting student achievement. The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a paraeducator who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting.

Each of the candidates nominated for Paraeducator of the year has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in the performance of her job. These paraeducators have earned the respect and admiration of their colleagues, parents, and students.
