A Message From The Principal
Throughout the month of October students at Suffield Middle school have been involved in many activities directly tied to creating a positive school culture, developing healthy relationships, and making connections with teachers, staff, and peers.
Earlier this year teachers in grade seven and eight, staff and students were engaged in team and trust building activities as part of the eighth grade white water rafting trip and the seventh grade high adventure activities at Brownstone Park Adventures. Students in the sixth grade will have a similar opportunity in the spring of this year.
Ally Zawawi, a seventh grade student wrote, “When I think of field trips, I usually think of museums. But the Brownstone field trip is very different. At Brownstone, you get to participate in some of the many team-building activities, such as cliff jumping, zip-lining, rock wall climbing, and attempting to climb the inflatables in the water. At Brownstone, you can not only create great experiences with your friends, but you also learn some valuable assets. These assets include leadership, cooperation, trust, and patience. We had a great time with our classmates participating in these challenging activities. The Brownstone trip is one that I had looked forward to since sixth grade, and I was not disappointed with it.”
According to Joe Tellier, an eighth grade student reflecting on the White Water Rafting Trip, “I learned more about the people around me in the boat and that helped me get along with them….Watching the Assistant Principal getting dunked with water was funny and he also has a great sense of humor and so did we.”
Several clubs have begun offering students the opportunity to be engaged with peers and adults in community service learning projects. Our Giraffe Club is working to develop awareness of breast cancer through posters and sharing information.
In the month of November, Giraffe students will work with the Emergency Aid Association distributing at Thanksgiving along with holiday cards for Suffield Senior citizens and a holiday party sponsored by the Suffield Police Department. Our MILD club is focusing on leadership, individual responsibility, team cohesiveness and personal/academic accountability.
The PROMISE girls recently "tied up" the front of Suffield Middle School with red ribbons in honor of Red Ribbon Week. They learned about making good decisions to say no to drugs and to bullying during the meeting. They have started a PROMISE Book Club - and are reading "Daphne's Book". They are in the midst of elections for officers: President, Vice President and Secretary. Nominations are in and they will be voting on November 7th during Election Week! This will be the girls opportunity to demonstrate leadership and responsibility. They will be mind-mapping to select a holiday service project for December - the girls will discuss and decide. They will have a special guest from NADA at thier meeting in November to facilitate anti-bullying activities with the girls.
Our S.O.U.R.C.E. club is dedicated to facilitating friendships, leadership and citizenship through other service learning activities and events. In October, SOURCE students engaged in creating seasonal “goody bags” to donate to Shriners Hospital for Children and in November and December will provide opportunities to create and send cards to Veterans through the Savannah’s Soldiers Campaign.
The Suffield Middle School Student Council has been very active this year in the annual participation at the Suffield on the Green, Tie dye social, T.G.I.S. (Thank Goodness its Saturday) activities. Other activities and events contributing to our positive school culture are being planned.
Presently Suffield Middle School is recruiting students who are interested in volunteering to assist in activities which will partner our students with children in urban schools developing mentoring around literacy based activities. This club formerly known as the LEO Club will seek opportunities for students to engage in activities with young children in schools and programs outside of Suffield fostering cultural awareness and diversity appreciation.
The Digital Newsletter and Photography Club have been researching and
writing interesting articles. Their most recent publication includes information about the white water rafting trip, pumpkin spice bread, The Giraffe Club raising awareness about breast cancer, a Halloween Powerpoint presentation, girls’ field hockey, fall poem, and The Boston Science Museum field trip. Click here to view their newsletter.
Finally our individual Advisory groups will be creating food baskets to
donate to less fortunate families in our area during this month. Please follow our clubs and activities on our website or contact our school Guidance Department for more information and ways to encourage your child’s involvement.
