RE:        Consideration of Early Release Day

Date:     November 17, 2016

I hope this communication finds everyone well as we welcome in the cool weather of the fall season.  This letter is to update families on the district’s exploration of a weekly early release day for the 2017-2018 school year.  In short, we are exploring the possibility of releasing one hour early once a week to allow for stronger collaboration with our faculty, which will lead to improving the quality of our instruction with students.

We are well aware that shifting to an early release day structure will have an impact on many families.  Because of this impact, we are taking the following steps to ensure that parent and community voices are heard prior to providing an update to the Board of Education regarding the viability of the weekly one hour early release day.  These steps include:

  • School based parent focus groups (dates will be communicated out by each school)
  • Online community forum to discuss the background and impact of the early release day on Tuesday, November 29th at 6:00 p.m.  Log in information will be coming out within the next week.
  • Meetings with local community partners regarding aftercare options
(including Suffield Parks and Recreation, AWS/MIS Before & After School Program,
as well as our bus company M&J)
  • Collaboration with school systems who utilize early release day
(examples include:  South Windsor, Windsor Locks, Glastonbury, West Hartford)

In addition to reaching out to community groups, we have also convened a faculty and administration work group, with a parent representative, to study early release day concept.

Going forward, each school will be in touch with you regarding dates for parent focus groups and we will communicate out the online forum date and protocols within the coming weeks.  As always, thank you for your support of the schools as we work to maintain and improve the quality of our academic program.
