Chromebook Rollout

Suffield Middle School has started off with a bang.  The hallways are bustling with excitement as the students begin their journey into the 15-16 school year.  An exciting new addition to the Middle School year is that every student has been equipped with a Chromebook.  While there was some troubleshooting involved in this big roll out at first, it has been smooth sailing as the students become more comfortable with the device and the teachers begin using them more and more in the classroom.  We are very lucky to have this technology and we will keep discovering new and exciting ways to use them as a learning tool.  Continue to talk to your students to find out how they are working with their Chromebook.

SMS Cross Country Team

This year, the SMS Cross Country Team got off to a sizzling start - and we aren’t just talking about the weather! Over 165 students signed up to run Cross Country this season, including quite a few returning State Championship competitors. Led by their captains Karissa Stanio, Emma Keane, Jared Sharp, Nick Sinofsky, and Ethan Lambert, both the boys and girls teams celebrated wins over Granby in their first meet of the season. Coach Dobi, Coach Marker, and Coach Killam are all optimistic about the team’s chances this year at the State Championship. With a third place boy’s finish and a second place girl’s finish in 2014, the coaches are confident that this year the team will once again perform at a high level. The athletes have home meets on September 24, October 2, (October 8 at Bruce Park), and October 14. Come out and support your SMS Cross Country Team!

White Water Rafting By Aiden Miller Grade 8

Recently, the 8th grade has had the chance to go on a journey of a lifetime! They went to the Northern Berkshire Mountains in Charlemont, Massachusetts to ride down the wild rapids with Crab Apple Whitewater Inc. The white team and blue team went separate days, but still had tons of fun! In each inflatable raft, the students had one teacher, one guide, and 6 friends. They rode 10 miles down the Deerfield River, through treacherous waters, sharing tons of laughs and memories. After the kids rode 6 miles down the river, they stopped at a campsite for lunch, which consisted of a sandwich buffet, lemonade, and delicious brownies. After that, the groups rode the rest of the 4 miles to the end. All the students rowed their way through the rapids, while the guides steered the boats. Throughout the ride, they rode through many crazy waters, including the infamous Zoar Gap, the most famous rapid on the course. It is known for its raging waters and drops. Throughout the trip, there were many opportunities to get out of the boat and swim! Each group also did a wheelie on the raft and have a huge water fight between boats. This is the one chance to pour water on the teachers! All-in-all, the whitewater rafting 8th grade field trip was a great experience and a huge success for everyone who went on this journey. The 8th grade really enjoyed it, and highly recommends it for every incoming student. You definitely don’t want to miss out on this trip!
