Gymnastics Show

The gymnastics show was amazing!  We had students showing off their work on the uneven bars, the floor, the vault, and the rings.  After several weeks of hard work there was clear improvement and outstanding talent.  Some students were beginners and others with years of experience but regardless their performances were truly spectacular.  Great work gymnastics team!

New England Air Museum

Every year the New England Air Museum writes a grant which allows the SMS 8th grade students to attend their SOAR program for free. (Student Outreach Aviation Resource)  This program enhances the 8th grade curriculum and gives real world meaning to the content. The first part of the day consists of the History and the Physics of flight coming to life when the tour guides brought us back to the age of the hot air balloon, the "Wright Flight" and how the physics of flight has changed through WWII. In the afternoon the students were excited to apply what they learned in the morning session. Their task was to construct their own balsa wood propeller flyers and experiment with wing variables to see whose plane could fly the fastest. Students then reported out their interesting findings group by group. One student was quoted saying "I have been to the NEAM many times, but this time was the best by far."

Multiply Your Options (MYO) Conference

On April 9, thirty 8th grade girls traveled to UCONN Storrs and participated in the 18th annual Multiply Your Options (MYO) conference.  The purpose of the conference is to expose young women to careers in science and encourage them to pursue science at the college level.  It was hosted by the UCONN School of Engineering.  During the morning sessions, students were involved in hand-on workshops or problem solving activities which were conducted by female facilitators with science, mathematics, engineering and technology focused careers. Students participated in a variety of activities from building a bioengineered hand to learning about the material that makes disposable diapers possible.  After lunch, students participated in an interactive panel activity called "tool clues". During a tool clues panel session, female role models are asked to bring from work objects or "tools" that give "clues" about their profession.
