SMS Variety Show

The Fiesta Time Variety Show was a big success!  Students from grades 6, 7, and 8 brought their gifts to the stage with everything from singing and dancing to an original Martial Arts performance.  There was even a “garage” band who took the name literally and used household items to make music.  It wasn’t only the students who entertained, our own superintendent, Dr. Baldwin, showed off her trumpet skills as well.  Students from the Middle School and McAlister enjoyed the performances during the day and parents were invited for the fun for an evening performance.  Overall it is pretty clear that Suffield Middle School has got talent!

Internet Safety Program for Parents

Do you want to see what your children do on-line and how it can have long term negative effects on their future?

Please join us, along with our guest speaker and local police officer Scott Driscoll, this Thursday, December 4th at 6 p.m. in the Suffield Middle School Auditorium.

Through this presentation, parents will be informed of new trends and techniques that are being used on-line by the predators and by our children. They will also be given tips on what to do to prevent a dangerous situation from happening. Parents will see how what their children do on-line now can have long term negative effects on their future. Parents will learn tools and strategies they can use to keep their families safe.

Winter Concert / Holiday Bazaar

On Thursday, December 11, 2014, there are two big events at Suffield Middle School! Our Winter Concert in the auditorium and the PTAC Holiday Bazaar in the cafeteria. Make plans to come to SMS for an enjoyable evening!

The Winter Concert will take place on December 11th in the SMS auditorium beginning at 6:00 p.m. Students in grades 6 through 8 band and chorus classes will participate. Please see the attached information letter for more details regarding arrival times and appropriate dress required for all students.

Cross Country

Suffield Middle School is very proud to celebrate a very successful cross country season for both the boys and the girls.  The girls went undefeated for the season and took second at states where the boys took third.  Approximately 130 kids joined the team and everyone worked hard all season.  The coaches were proud to say that for an individual sport every kid truly acted like a team player cheering everyone on and supporting their fellow runners (even when they were injured).  Four eighth graders who really shined were the captains of the team Kyle Englander, Matt Sweeney, Sophie Lupone, and Cam Miller.  These four showed true leadership skills and were great role models of sportsmanship for our team and others.   Congratulations on such a great season.  Go Wildcats!

Nurse’s Corner — by Patrice Heuschkel

Now that cold and flu season has arrived, please note that if your child is ill, make sure that they are fever free or have not vomited for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Children who have not fully recovered put themselves and others at risk of contracting additional illnesses.

We are always in need of tissues! Please consider donating a box for your child to use in their classroom!

I will be starting vision screening in December. Vision screenings, as mandated by the CT General Statues, consist of screening for distance visual acuity. I will be testing vision by using the Snellen Eye Chart from a 20 foot distance. If your child wears glasses please remind him/her to bring them to the test.

Just a reminder, all medication, prescription and over the counter medications, must be brought in and picked up by a legally responsible adult. Parents of students requiring medication during school should contact me.  All medications, prescription and over the counter, require a physician’s written order.

Cough drops are acceptable at school as long as they are provided from home and sent to school along with a note giving permission by a parent to be used as needed.

Red Ribbon Week — by Gail Myers

RED RIBBON WEEK @ Suffield Middle School

October 27-31, 2014

The PROMISE girls helped to make it happen!

On Monday, October 20th, PROMISE girls tied red ribbons all around the front of our school and surrounding grounds.

On Tuesday, October 28th, PROMISE girls distributed red ribbons to wear.  As each student received a ribbon, he/she signed a ticket to put in the “treasure box” for Friday’s drawing.

Wednesday, October 29th -  more opportunities for students to pick up their red ribbon in the lunchroom and signup for the drawing.

On Thursday, October 30th during FLEX PERIOD and lunch, the PROMISE girls set up a table in the Main Lobby with our Anti Bullying-Pledge to be Drug Free poster on a table.  We invited every student to stop by during the period to sign the poster and receive a Red Ribbon pencil or bracelet and pledge sticker.

On Friday, October 31st, the drawing took place during each lunch period.  Three students per grade, each wearing the Red Ribbon were picked from the “pledge to be drug & bully free tickets” and each received a gift card from CVS!

Ribbons, poster, and gift cards were generously funded by the SMS P.T.A.C.

Suffield FIRST Lego League Robotics

A BIG congratulations goes out to our Suffield FIRST Lego League Robotics teams. On Saturday November 15, 2014, they competed right here at Suffield Middle School at their Regional competition against twenty-one teams from the Hartford county area.

After a rough start and a bit of rocky season, both teams pulled it all together and showed us all just how much they wanted it at Saturday's regional competition.

The Dragons team #401 was awarded an honorary mention for their robot design, third place in the presentation / skit, and second place for Champions which came with a Golden Ticket to the state Championship.

While the EV3 Bombers #397 walked away with the third place champions award, won a Golden Ticket to the State Championship, and won first place for the presentation / skit.

Both teams worked so hard and all coaches, mentors, and parents will remember this day for a long time.

They are now preparing for the State Championship on
December 7, 2014 at Sheldon High School. Wish them LUCK!

Coaches: Lori Foss, Mel Chapman, Bekki Judkins, Lisa Tseka, Brenda Judkins

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is considered the “little league” of the FIRST Robotics Competition for 9-14 year old children.  It involves hands on learning of math, science, and technology through robotics, using LEGO Mind storms products. Students are lead in a team building approach by interested parent volunteers, and engineering mentors. These children are using their creativity and experiencing hands on learning in the areas of math, science, and technology during a time when these areas are rapidly expanding.

Who knows what one of these kids will do or be some day with our help!
